The interoperability of messaging apps is one of the novelties that the Digital Markets Act (DMA) will bring.
Soon a messaging service runs on the Threefold Grid. Once the DMA is applicable, you will be able to text Whatsapp users. No need to switch messaging services after you have chosen one.
The DMA aims to limit the market power of big tech online platforms and intends to ensure fair competition. It is a list of dos and don’ts.
Besides interoperability for messaging services, the DMA will allow users to remove pre-installed apps on their mobile devices, and explicit consent is needed for combining personal data for targeted advertising.
Moreover, operating systems will have to allow alternative app stores. And advertisers will be able to access all the data related to their ads in real-time and free of charge to ensure they get the best value for money.
The DMA is approved on the 24th of March by the EU Parliament and EU Council. Probably it will come into effect in 2023.
